Region 3 — Southern Wisconsin

Milwaukee, Madison & Southern Wisconsin

From Milwaukee’s Lake Michigan lakefront to Madison’s isthmus, from the Kettle Moraine to the Mississippi River bluffs — Southern Wisconsin is the state’s population and economic heart. CityWI connects Southern Wisconsin residents with trusted local businesses across the metro, the south central, and the southwest.

About Southern Wisconsin

Southern Wisconsin runs from the Illinois state line north to roughly Highway 21, and from Lake Michigan west to the Mississippi River. It covers metro Milwaukee and its suburbs, the state capital in Madison, the industrial corridor along I-94, the rolling farmland of the south central counties, and the Driftless Area’s river valleys in the southwest. More than three million Wisconsin residents call the region home — roughly half the state’s population.

The economic mix reflects that scale. Milwaukee anchors manufacturing, financial services, brewing, and a growing tech sector. Madison drives state government, the University of Wisconsin, biotech, and insurance. The I-94 corridor between the two cities carries some of Wisconsin’s busiest commuter and freight traffic. Further south, Kenosha and Racine share the Lake Michigan economy with Milwaukee, while the southwestern counties around La Crosse run on healthcare, river logistics, and agriculture.
