About Kaukauna
Kaukauna sits on the Fox River about ten miles east of Appleton, a city of roughly 17,000 that has long been known as the “Lion of the Fox” for its industrial muscle and its position on one of the steepest drops in the Fox River waterway. The river descends more than 50 feet through Kaukauna via a series of navigation locks — the highest lift along the historic Fox-Wisconsin Waterway — and that drop defined the city from its earliest days as a hub for paper mills, flour mills, and hydroelectric power.
Today, Kaukauna’s economy is anchored by advanced paper and packaging production (ND Paper operates a major mill here), food processing, and a strong base of regional manufacturing and trades. The downtown along Wisconsin Avenue and Second Street has been revitalized over the past decade with local restaurants, shops, and the renovated 1000 Islands Environmental Center — a riverfront nature preserve that draws families, birders, and cross-country skiers year-round.
Kaukauna residents live across a mix of established riverfront neighborhoods and newer subdivisions on the north and east sides. The Kaukauna Area School District — home of the Galloping Ghosts — is a source of real community identity, particularly during football season.
